Creativetourist.com is an online newsletter specialising in arts and culture. With a focus on the north of England, the platform attracts up to 60,000 readers a month. The site features guides, previews and reviews on theatre, cinema, exhibitions, music and more.
As a result of volunteering once a month at Manchester's Castlefield Gallery; I was offered an opportunity to write exhibition previews for creativetourist in exchange for writing advice from the site's exhibitions editor.
The nature of a preview offers a taste of upcoming exhibitions; it involves investing time into gathering information around an artist and their practice to put a new show into context for a prospective visitor.
This experience will be invaluable to the development of my writing. In the process of detailed research into the work of others; analysing and summarising the nature of exhibitions. I will amass a plethora of knowledge around the language of contemporary art. Subsequently this will contribute to how articulate my own art practice and locate myself in the art world.
Writing for a varied audience will encourage me to adapt the way I present my writing and be more mindful of how it might be received. This can be applied to not only writing, but for studio or exhibition practice; where understanding the audience will be a part of the work is of paramount importance to the artist's process.
