Initial Communication / First Meeting - External Exhibition

External Exhibition Meeting 1.

Stephanie Burkinshaw - Place, Growth and Prosperity Team - Stoke-On-Trent Council

13/11/17

In our first external meeting regarding our external exhibition. Myself and Fearn discussed with Steph the possibility of gaining access to the Chatterley Whitfield site in Chell, Stoke. She mentioned supervised access to the site will only be available for a maximum of 2 days. The deteriorating quality of the buildings on site means they're unsuitable for public access. - In response to this new knowledge we would have to source another location to exhibit the work made from the site.

Steph mentioned a spoil heap next to the site that overlooks Chatterley Whitfield; it'd be interesting to gather material from this location in response to the ex mine next door.

Alternatives in Burslem were also suggested - an array of empty shops and spaces in one of Stoke's prolific towns would be a brilliant opportunity. The recently restored Wedgwood institute opposite the Burslem School of Art offers a space with beautiful Victorian architecture. As the building's two front spaces are suitable for public access. It would be an ideal place to create site responsive work and have it exhibited in the same location. It generates a better conversation between artwork and location that audiences can engage with first-hand.
