External Exhibition - Co-curating and Collaborating

Collaborative External Exhibition

Amy Foster / Fearn Hepden

Myself and Fearn came together to discuss the possibility of co-curating a site-responsive exhibition in the city. Stoke-On-Trent has a rich industrial heritage; the decline of ceramics production in the city left behind an array of empty space holding on to its past. These spaces are in need to regeneration to develop the potential of what this space can be used for moving forwards. The upcoming City of Culture bid is a prime opportunity for us both to come together to show what arts can do to create new histories in these vacant spaces throughout the city.

Having never worked on a project together before; the challenges of opposing art practices and negotiating an empty space externally of Staffordshire University will be valuable experience to take beyond the degree to a future in the arts. What we can bring externally is the experience of generating and managing our own separate group exhibitions during February and March 2017.

Managing the creative project entirely ourselves will encourage us to think outside of the box. Using our creative reasoning to come up with new ways to use old premises to create new, interesting art; also thinking of ideas that engage a wider audience, not just viewers familiar with our arts practices and personalities.

We intend to share marketing , proposal writing and negotiating with the council or commercial property owners between ourselves. This again allows us to learn essential negotiating skills that we can use as artists with gallery organisations.
